Iowa – FAQ

You qualify for a medical marijuana card in Iowa if you meet the following requirements:

• You have a qualifying condition.
• You are at least 18 years old.
• You are certified by a healthcare practitioner.
  

Note: Patients under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian apply as their caregiver. Iowa residency is no longer required, so qualified patients from other states may apply if they meet Iowa’s program requirements.

Follow the steps below to get certified for medical marijuana with Quick Med Cards:

1. Complete our sign-up form and create your account.
2. Book your appointment with one of our Iowa cannabis doctors.
3. Attend your virtual consultation over a video call.
4. Get your certification after the doctor’s approval.

No. The law doesn’t obligate marijuana doctors in Iowa to approve patients for medical marijuana. Still, our MMJ doctors will most likely certify you if your health could benefit from medical cannabis.

Yes. Once you book your appointment, we’ll send you a secure link for your video call when the consultation time approaches. You’ll meet with your physician to discuss how medical cannabis could benefit your health–this generally takes 10-15 minutes. After your doctor approves, you’ll receive your certification via email. It’ll also be available from your Quick Med Cards dashboard.

After your healthcare practitioner certifies you, follow these steps to get your Iowa medical cannabis card:

1. Complete the patient application online through Iowa HHS’s registration system.
2. Upload your signed Healthcare Practitioner Certification Form and required photo ID.
3. Pay the $100 application fee or the $25 reduced fee if you qualify.
4. Wait for Iowa HHS to review your application. You will receive an update within 7 days.
5. If you provide an email address, you will receive a temporary card by email. Iowa HHS will mail your permanent card to you.

Once you receive your registration card, you can purchase medical cannabis from a licensed Iowa dispensary.

Iowa HHS reviews your application and will communicate with you within 7 days. If you provide an email address, you will receive a temporary medical cannabis card by email first. Iowa HHS will then mail your permanent card to you.

Your Iowa medical card will be valid for 1 year.

If you lose or destroy your Iowa medical card, you can request a replacement from Iowa HHS. You must provide the valid photo ID you used when you applied.

You can also access your digital registration card while your registration is active.

Iowa residents applying for a medical cannabis registration card must provide a valid photo ID. Accepted forms include the following:

• A valid Iowa driver’s license
• A valid Iowa non-operator identification card

Have your valid ID ready for your consultation so the provider can verify your identity before issuing a certification.

Yes. Iowa no longer requires state residency to apply for a medical cannabis registration card. You must still meet Iowa’s medical eligibility requirements and complete the state application process. A medical card from another state does not by itself authorize purchases at Iowa dispensaries.

Iowa does not list medical records as a separate required application document. However, your healthcare practitioner must evaluate your condition before providing a certification. Medical records can help your practitioner understand your diagnosis, previous treatments, and how your condition affects your daily life.

Yes. If our doctor determines that you do not qualify for medical marijuana, you can request a refund of your appointment fee, minus $5 for bank fees. Email staff@quickmedcards.com within 4 months of your appointment date. Refunds do not apply if you miss or cancel your appointment or fail to complete the required state application steps. Read the Quick Med Cards refund policy for details.

Iowa recognizes the following qualifying conditions:

• Cancer with qualifying symptoms, such as severe pain, nausea, severe vomiting, or severe wasting
• Multiple sclerosis with severe and persistent muscle spasms
• Seizures, including those associated with epilepsy
• HIV or AIDS
• Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
• Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
• Parkinson’s disease
• Chronic pain
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
• A terminal illness with a probable life expectancy of less than 1 year and qualifying symptoms
• Severe, intractable autism with self-injurious or aggressive behaviors
• Corticobasal degeneration

A qualifying condition alone does not guarantee approval. An authorized healthcare practitioner must determine whether you meet Iowa’s requirements.

Yes. If you find a lower price for a comparable consultation, email the webpage link to staff@quickmedcards.com. Our team will review it and, if it qualifies, beat the price by $5.

Iowa separately offers a reduced registration fee of $25 instead of the standard $100 for eligible patients who provide proof of qualifying benefits, such as SSDI, SSI, Iowa Medicaid, or Hawk-I. This reduction applies to the state fee, not the Quick Med Cards consultation fee.

Yes. You need to pay the appointment fee to reserve your consultation time. The fee covers your appointment and certification, if approved. Any state application fee is separate and must be paid directly to the state.
