Get Your Kentucky Medical Marijuana Card

Follow these steps to get a Kentucky medical marijuana card as a first-time patient:

1. 1. Book an in-person appointment with an authorized Kentucky medical cannabis practitioner.
   2. Obtain a written certification from the practitioner if you qualify.
   3. Submit your medical cannabis card application through the Kentucky Patient and Caregiver Registry Portal.
   4. Wait for your application to be reviewed and approved.
   5. Download your Kentucky medical cannabis card after approval.
   6. Purchase medical cannabis from a licensed Kentucky dispensary.

After receiving your written certification, submit your application through the Kentucky Patient and Caregiver Registry Portal and provide the required documentation.

Important: Avoid scam websites. Apply only through the official Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program website or the Patient and Caregiver Registry Portal.

Your initial Kentucky medical cannabis certification is valid for 60 days. It may be extended for up to three additional 60-day periods.

For renewals, a subsequent medical cannabis certification is valid for 90 days. The Kentucky medical cannabis registry ID card is generally valid for one year, unless your practitioner specifies an earlier expiration date.

Your KY medical marijuana card is valid fo 1 year–unless your certifying physician recommends less.

The renewal process follows most of the same steps as your first application. The main difference? Your cannabis doctor can certify you through a video call instead of an in-person visit.

It's worth noting that the telehealth consultation is available only for eligible renewals with the same practitioner who completed the initial in-person visit.

If you are changing to a different practitioner, you must complete an in-person appointment before the practitioner can provide a new certification.

After you’ve signed up and booked your appointment, you will receive an email confirmation with your appointment details. Before your scheduled appointment, you will receive instructions for joining the secure video consultation. Click the provided link to start your evaluation. The medical cannabis doctor will review your information and determine whether you qualify for medical cannabis certification.

If you miss your appointment or need to reschedule, contact the medical cannabis provider or clinic as soon as possible. A no-show fee may apply to missed appointments.

• • Kentucky resident: You are a Kentucky resident, have a qualifying medical condition, receive a written certification from an authorized medical cannabis practitioner, and do not have a disqualifying felony conviction.
  • Visiting qualified patient: You are at least 21 years old, are not a Kentucky resident or have lived in Kentucky for less than 30 days, have no disqualifying felony conviction, have a valid out-of-state medical cannabis card, and have documentation of a qualifying medical condition.

  The qualifying conditions for medical marijuana in Kentucky include:

  • • Cancer of any type or stage
    • Chronic, severe, intractable, or debilitating pain
    • Epilepsy or another intractable seizure disorder
    • Multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, or spasticity
    • Chronic nausea or cyclical vomiting syndrome that has proven resistant to other conventional medical treatments
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
    • Other medical conditions may also qualify if they cause an underlying symptom that is expressly recognized as a qualifying medical condition under Kentucky law and the symptom is properly diagnosed by a medical cannabis practitioner or the practitioner confirms a diagnosis provided by another healthcare provider.
