How to renew your Medical MJ card

Please note – Your NJMMP Patient Identification Card is valid for 2 years, however, your medical mj recommendation is only valid for 1 year. Therefore, after that time, you need to be re-evaluated by one of our licensed doctors.

However, you don’t have to worry about your recommendation expiring. We will be in touch to let you know when it’s time to see our doctor again for a re-evaluation.

Important – If you are a caregiver, your Registry ID is only valid for the same period as your patient’s medical MMJ card. When your patient’s card expires, they will need to get a new certification from their doctor. After your patient has successfully renewed their med card, you will need to renew your registry card as well. You need to make sure that you have a valid Registry ID card when buying from a dispensary.

    How to Renew:

    1. Receive email notice from NJMMP

When your two-year ID card is nearing its expiration date the NJMMP will send an email with information on how to re-register. You can also access these instructions anytime by logging into your profile.

    * E-mail notices will be sent out at 60 days and again at 30 days prior to expiration and will include instructions for re-registration.

    2. Log in to your NJMMP patient account as a returning user

You review your personal information to make sure it is up to date.

Please note – All information must match your New Jersey driver’s license or state-issued ID. If you have a change of address card, use that address.

    3. Visit a Medical MJ Doctor

If you are a returning QuickMedCards patient, you can book a follow-up appointment to renew your certification.

If this is your first time using QuickMedCards, you need to complete our Patient Questionnaire form first.

    4. Receive Your Medical MJ ID in the Mail
Once you’re certified by our doctor, your new card will be mailed to you at the address you listed in the patient portal. The new card will have an issue date for the day after your original card expires.

    New Jersey Caregiver information

Caregivers are elected for minors or patients suffering from an extreme medical condition and cannot physically go to the alternative treatment center by themselves.

Caregivers should be 18 years old or above, a resident of New Jersey, and must agree to assist a qualifying patient with the medical use of mj.

Similar to patients, caregivers must go through the same process of registration to receive a card. Furthermore, they need to undergo and pass a criminal background check before they are deemed qualified for the position.

You can check the New Jersey Department of Health for more information on Caregiver requirements.

NJ Medical MJ Med Card Guidelines

Patients validated for the state program who receive a medical mj card may purchase and use medical mj in New Jersey.

    • You are allowed up to three (3) ounces of medical mj during a thirty (30) day period.

It’s important to know that medical mj patients may not operate any vehicle under the influence of mj. That is to say, driving under the influence of medical mj is illegal. This also applies to aircraft and marine vessels.

Patients are not allowed to use MMJ in public places. Smoking of medical mj falls under the Smoke-Free Air Act at N.J.S.A. 26:3D-57 and is subject to the provisions of the Smoke-Free Air Act.

This means that you’re not allowed to smoke in any indoor public place and work place. For example, in public beaches, recreational centers, school compounds, school buses, or on public transport. In fact, private vehicles are also considered ‘public places’ when in motion.

Medical mj products are only available at approved dispensaries listed below:

FAQs About How to Get a Medical MJ Card in NJ

When did New Jersey legalize medical mj?

Medical MJ was signed into law by Gov. Jon S. Corzine in 2010. Legalizing the use of mj for medical reasons is an enormous leap for the Garden State. Previously, it was considered one of the states with a stiffer stance when it comes to crimes related to mj.

In the November 2020 election, with 67% of votes in favor, New Jersey citizens voted on permitting the possession, sale, and use of mj for adults 21 and over. However, at the time regulatory rules or structures were not included, so it might take a year or longer to see the licensing system and dispensaries in place.

To date, residents of New Jersey who pursue relief with the help of medical mj can access the medication without penalty.

    Who prescribes medical MJ?

It is important to note that doctors cannot prescribe mj, they can only recommend it. In addition, only a licensed medical mj doctor may recommend mj treatment. Furthermore, the doctors are guided by a list of qualifying conditions when evaluating if you’re a suitable candidate.
